Most bad decisions aren’t made from bad data — they’re made from a short list. The first plausible answer wins because generating alternatives feels like delay. Creative thinking isn’t a personality trait. It’s a discipline: a set of repeatable moves you practice until they become reflex.

This free sampler gives you ten of the 84 guided exercises from my book Unlocking Creativity — the ones that hit hardest for busy leaders. No theory. No fluff. Just drills.

The 10-for-10 concept

Ten exercises. Ten weeks. Fifteen minutes each, one per week, in order — they build on each other across three stages: first expand your thinking, then turn problems into opportunities, then decide and execute. Do them in writing, not in your head. Thinking feels like concluding; writing is concluding.

The ten exercises

  1. The Ten-Option Rule — Write down ten genuinely different options before you allow yourself to pick one. Better decisions usually follow.
  2. Make It a Method — Distill your best decisions into a repeatable five-step checklist. A method beats a brilliant moment.
  3. The Constraint Box — Re-brief a stalled initiative with half the budget or half the timeline. Watch the interesting options appear.
  4. Invent What’s Missing — Turn this week’s annoyances into invention briefs: “Someone should invent ___ that ___.”
  5. Complaint → Prototype — Sketch the ugliest possible version of an idea in fifteen minutes. Tangible beats theoretical.
  6. The Crossroads Memo — Write the hard decision down: the two paths, what you’d need to believe for each, the cost of waiting. Then name the one assumption to test first.
  7. The 2032 Memo — Describe your industry as if the change you fear has already happened. Then list the three moves you’d wish you’d made today.
  8. The Green Brief — Ask what your flagship offering would look like carbon-neutral and zero-waste. Constraints like these produce new products.
  9. Founder for a Day — Pitch a competitor to your own team, starting tomorrow. Bring one insight back to your real roadmap.
  10. The One-Page Creative Plan — Outcome, three next moves with dates, one accountable owner. Start move one within 48 hours.

How to use this sampler

  • One per week. Ten exercises, ten weeks, three stages — they build on each other.
  • Fifteen minutes max. If it takes longer, you’re overthinking it.
  • In writing. Each exercise includes a “Your Turn” worksheet — use it. Thinking feels like concluding; writing is concluding.
